Chapter 12

Daymon

Just over an earth year later; six Nargo weeks later

“Thank you, Daymon,” Kendra says exasperatedly.

“For?”

“For giving me a break from the twins, getting a babysitter, and taking me out for supper. I’m exhausted,” she admits.

I can’t imagine Kendra taking care of the twins by herself. What if I never would have come back from Nargo? There is no way she could have handled it. It’s a lot of work for two of us let alone one.

I chuckle and pour her another glass of wine. “You deserve it.”

She grins and takes a bite of her salmon. She has no idea that after this meal I’m taking her to a five-star hotel for the night. She needs this. She’s earned it.

“You know, this salmon is really good,” she says through a full mouth.

I’m having the same thing and, yes, it is delicious. I nod in agreement. I straighten my tie and motion for the waiter to bring us some dessert menus. Kendra eyes them and shakes her head. I can tell she’s stuffed, but that doesn’t mean I can’t order her one to go for later.

“Can we get the cheesecake, please ma’am, to go if we could,” I order. The waitress smiles and assures us that it’ll be out in a minute.

Kendra looks pleased which in return makes me pleased. I reach across the table and grip her wrist softly without even thinking about it. “Are you ready to get the bill?” I ask.

She reluctantly nods. “I’m not sure if I’m ready to leave just yet, but yes, I guess we better,” she decides with a curt nod.

The waiter returns with the bill and our dessert. I pay for our meal, then I hold Kendra’s hand as we exit the restaurant. I open the passenger side door of my new Mercedes, and she gets in. When I’m in the vehicle, I start the engine and lean over to plant a kiss on her lips. I deepen the kiss and then sit back in my seat and put the car in reverse.

“What was that for?” she asks, her cheeks clearly reddening.

“For being the best girlfriend anyone could ask for,” I say through a grin.

She lights up and grips my hand as I drive with the other. She turns the radio on softly and then leans back and closes her eyes. I know she’s fallen asleep when a song she hates comes on, and she doesn’t change it immediately.

We pull up in front of the hotel and I pop the trunk. I hand our bags to the bag guy at the door and give the valet my keys before picking her up and carrying her out of the car. I don’t have the strength that I once had but I’m still strong, not that Kendra is heavy. I know she’s exhausted so I’m not surprised when she doesn’t wake up while I check in and carry her to our room. I fill the Jacuzzi full of water. The sound of the jets wakes her up.
